Last month I went on a fun chocolate tasting tour with Triple– around the London Borough of Chelsea with a local guide and leading Chocolate Expert Jennifer Earle. Triple is a travel company that allows you to book onto different tours/ activities around the world and experience something new with a local tour guide.

- The first place we visited on our tour route was R Chocolate. I loved trying out the fresh apple chocolate with champagne truffle accompanied by a white chocolate drink ( as seen in the above picture), a combination which surprisingly went well together.
Jennifer Earle is a leading Chocolate Expert who has featured in various publications due to her chocolate expertise. In 2005 she founded the Chocolate Ecstasy Tours, her own chocolate tour company where she organizes chocolate tours around London for small groups. Jennifer’s inspiration for the idea came from one of her favorite quotes that “if you do something you love you’ll never work a day in your life”. She wrote a list of things she loved – ‘chocolate, meeting people, talking, eating and London’ – and decided that the best way to incorporate all her passions was to develop Chocolate Ecstasy Tours which encapsulates well everything she loves. She also runs tours in collaboration with Triple on the weekends. Jennifer is a friendly, enthusiastic and knowledgeable tour guide.

I enjoyed listening to her talk in-depth about the different chocolate, including the history of the various venues we visited on the day. One interesting theory I learned was that Knightsbridge used to be viewed as a poverty-stricken area during the Victorian era. It was apparently so unsafe that you needed to be escorted by a knight in order to safely pass through. Another interesting fact is that the area is famous for being the first place to produce Bone china.
Milk Chocolate & Passion-fruit Macaron
The weather on the day was warm and bright, which was great for walking around the city. I was surprised by how much I learned within a short time frame. Jennifer remained engaging and professional throughout, making the time breeze by quickly. The tour took around 3 hours 30 minutes to complete. We set off out at Ebury Street and then went exploring around Chelsea/Belgravia. Some of the chocolate stores on our route included L’Artisan du Chocolat, Pierre Hermé, and R Chocolate.

What are the prominent chocolates/treats included in the tour?
‘There’s always some chocolate truffles and a Pierre Herme macaron and a taste of a cronut’.
Do you have any exciting future plans for Chocolate Ecstasy Tours / Taste Tripper?
‘Yes! We’re launching an updated version of the app with plans for a London Vegan Explorer and London Bakery Explorer in 2019.’
Do you have any advice/tips for anyone who is interested in getting into the chocolatier industry?
‘Find a chocolatier to work for – even work experience for a week – to see if you really like it. If you do, work for chocolatiers for AT LEAST a few months so you can master the basic skills. I’d always recommend a niche to make sure you can distinguish yourselves from other chocolatiers and if you don’t like marketing, find someone who does to go into business with you. It’s a very difficult industry to even make a basic income from. The investment costs are high and there isn’t a huge appetite for paying for fine chocolate in the UK.’
Do you have a favorite inspirational quote/motto?
‘I always live by the “nothing ventured, nothing gained” and also Maya Angelou: “people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel”.’
